Upcoming work to a railroad crossing in Chapel Hill will lead to days of a road closure, according to the town government.
A release on Thursday from the Town of Chapel Hill alerted residents that Homestead Road will be closed between Weaver Dairy Road Extension and Seawell School Road on Wednesday, September 18 and Thursday, September 19.
Norfolk Southern will be doing the railroad work, but the closure offers the town an opportunity to finish its own project: installing new sidewalks along Homestead Road. The release said Chapel Hill workers will complete the new sidewalks at the railroad crossing, some of the finishing steps on the year-long Homestead Road Connectivity Project. The effort has seen sidewalks, bike lanes and an extended turning lane added to the popular east-to-west corridor, which the Town of Chapel Hill has championed as key for both pedestrian safety and ease of access for surrounding residents.
While community members who live in the neighborhoods along that stretch of Homestead Road will maintain their access, school traffic will be detoured during the two days of the road closure. The town government’s detour suggestion for road users traveling from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to either Chapel Hill High School, Smith Middle School, or Seawell Elementary School is using Eubanks Road to access Rogers Road and then Homestead Road. Meanwhile, those traveling eastbound from Hillsborough Road in Carrboro should follow that order in reverse — Homestead Road to Rogers Road and the Eubanks Road to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard — although access to each of the schools will not require a detour.
More information about the Homestead Road Connectivity Project can be found on the Town of Chapel Hill website.
