UNC Police and the Chapel Hill Police Department responded to a call Friday about a break-in to a vehicle on UNC campus.
UNC Police tweeted the department had arrested a subject earlier in the day for breaking into a vehicle parked in Cobb Parking Deck. Officers were alerted after a UNC employee saw the suspect inside the vehicle and called 911.
The department reminded visitors to campus and Chapel Hill residents to lock vehicle doors and report any suspicious incidents to the authorities.
Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue says between traveling, shopping and work demands, sometimes it’s easy to overlook safety and crime prevention. But he says this is the time of the year where his department sees one of the biggest crime spikes.
“During the holidays, we are particularly vulnerable to property crime,” said Blue. “Let your neighbors know what your travel patterns are going to be so they can keep an eye out for your property and let them know when you’re coming back. They’ll know whether there’s a strange car in your driveway.”
