The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said it discovered a body in Jordan Lake after searching for a missing person. Their identity has not been released as of Thursday afternoon.

An update from the sheriff’s office said the body was recovered from the lake around 1 p.m. Thursday. The individual was believed to have been having a mental health crisis, according to an earlier alert shared Thursday.

After receiving a call about the person’s last known location, Chatham County deputies located an unoccupied vehicle near the U.S. 64 bridge at Jordan Lake late Wednesday night.

The death marks the fifth reported fatal incident around Jordan Lake in 2025. A 19-year-old drowned on July 13 while out swimming with family and after losing his flotation device. A week earlier, two Durham residents were out on the water in the same area around the same time the brunt of Tropical Depression Chantal swept through central North Carolina and dropped historic amounts of rainfall on the region. Search and rescue crews recovered their bodies on July 7 and July 8. In June, a Fayetteville man drowned after slipping and falling into the water below B. Everett Jordan Dam, which is one of the southern-most points of Jordan Lake.

Alongside the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Thursday’s search was also conducted by Chatham County Emergency Management, Lee County Emergency Management, the North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, and North Carolina State Parks.

The sheriff’s office added in its release it extends condolences to the individual’s family.
