Durham police are investigating a shooting at the UNC Family Medicine Center location in Durham, where two people were killed Monday morning.
Police responded to gunshots from the center located at Mayfair Street and Weymouth Street around 8 a.m. on Monday. Police said they found a man and a woman dead.
The medicine center is a primary care and sports medicine facility, which would have just been opening when the shooting occurred.
UNC Family Medicine tweeted hours after the incident, saying the “tragic shooting” took place in the center’s parking lot and was an “isolated incident.” It said all of its staff and patients inside the building were safe. The tweet was later deleted.
UNC Family Medicine later said the Durham location will close for the rest of Monday, as well as Tuesday and Wednesday. The center had previously planned to be closed on Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Durham Police Department tweeted a staging area for those worried about family or friends was set up at the Sams Club on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard for later in the morning.
The shooting continues a streak of gun violence in Durham over the 24 hours. A man died Sunday afternoon after being shot outside a public housing community.
