Roughly 16,000 revelers poured onto Franklin Street to celebrate Halloween in Chapel Hill Wednesday night.

The town released the crowd estimate late Wednesday. Officials added that “Orange County Emergency Services responded to four alcohol-related medical calls in the closed area.”

“We want to say thank you to everyone for keeping this a safe night,” Chapel Hill Police chief and executive director for Community Safety Chris Blue said in a release. “Halloween in Chapel Hill is a tradition, and it’s important to us that everyone can get home safely at the end of the night.”

Streets around downtown Chapel Hill were closed for roughly three hours, reopening around 11 p.m.
