The CCPRCR had begun talks in January with the heirs of Clifton Johnson, the original owner of the property. It had been unclaimed since his death several decades ago.
Among the plans the CCPRCR has for the property are to remove invasive species and to relocate access for paddlers to a part of the newly added land. The latter goal, which will result in the new river access being farther downstream from the Old Bynum Bridge, has the purpose of curbing erosion and providing a better experience for people using the river.
The expansion of the park will also add to the total distance of the Haw River State Trail, a multi-use trail currently under development.
“We are excited about this acquisition as it will expand our riverside park and is a part of the county’s plan to develop a trail network system,” said Tracy Burnett, the director of the CCPRCR.
