The Carrboro Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Resources Department (RPCRD) has announced a new playground design coming to Baldwin Park.

The upgraded equipment will feature main play structures designed for children aged 2-5 and 6-12, and will incorporate elements to improve accessibility in order to provide a more engaging, safe, and inclusive environment. The project will cost $277,000 and is under contract with Pittsboro-based company Barrs Recreation.

In a survey conducted by the RPCRD, 70% of respondents favored playground improvements over other amenities. The department also assessed community preferences at an engagement event for people living in the area, a historically Black neighborhood where the 2.5-acre park provides a main recreational space.

The playground will be closed for the renovations until June, though the Baldwin Park Community Garden, pavilion, and basketball court will remain open.
