The Woods Charter School in Chatham County earned a top-5 spot in a new ranking of North Carolina high schools, while several Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools also earned recognition high in the list.

The U.S. News & World Report released its 2021 Best High Schools List on Tuesday, with rankings determined by factors like proficiency scores, graduate rates and college readiness of students. In North Carolina, Woods Charter School placed fourth overall, the highest spot for a Chapel Hill school, while East Chapel Hill High School placed tenth.

With both those schools slotting into top tier for the state, each also earned spots in the U.S. News & World Report’s top 500 high schools across the country. Woods Charter ranks #170 nationally and East Chapel Hill High ranks #352.

Ranked ahead of Woods Charter in the top spots are the Early College at Guilford, Raleigh Charter High School and the STEM Early College at North Carolina A&T, respectively.

Additional CHCCS schools featured on the North Carolina top high schools list are Chapel Hill High School in 19th and Carrboro High School in 33rd.

One Orange County Schools high school made the 2021 list: Cedar Ridge High School, which checked in at the 98th spot.

The U.S. News & World Report, which shares annual rankings in both secondary and higher education, recently recognized UNC in its 2021 Best Colleges ranking. The Chapel Hill university placed fifth in the country among public schools and in the top tier of its best value schools, the 20th consecutive year UNC has earned recognition toward the top of the list.
