East Chapel Hill High School student Clara Brodey was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar on Wednesday. This year’s class, the 59th in history of the award, recognized 161 high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields.

“U.S. Presidential Scholars have always represented the future of our country and the bright promise it holds,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “I want each of these remarkable students to know: your passion and intellect, pursuit of excellent, and spirit of service are exactly what our country needs.”

This is the second straight year at least one student from Chapel Hill has been named a Presidential Scholar. Two students — one at Chapel Hill High School and another at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics — were named Presidential Scholars in 2022.

More than 5,000 students qualified as candidates for the 2023 class of scholars. That group was determined by performance on SAT and ACT exams or through nominations from school officers. The 2023 class is comprised of one male and female student from each state, as well as 15 chosen at-large, 20 scholars in the arts and 20 in career and technical education. Brodey is one of four scholars from the state of North Carolina.

An online program will recognize the class of 2023 this summer.
