Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue will now also serve as the Executive Director for Community Safety for the town.

The extension of duties was announced by town manager Roger Stancil earlier this week.

“We look forward to the opportunity to think about community safety in a different way, bringing a renewed level of energy and focus to the ongoing Community Safety Partnership,” Stancil said.

Blue will now be working with other department heads to understand how the divisions relate to his new role, according to a release.

“Our ongoing goal is to refine our organizational structure to focus on key community priorities in a collaborative and innovative way,” Stancil said. “The strategic policy leadership of an executive director focusing on community safety will serve the Town well with open channels of communication to other Town departments.”

Blue was hired as a Chapel Hill Police officer in 1997 and has been chief since 2010.
