Construction has wrapped up on Phase II of the Orange County Veterans Memorial in northern Chapel Hill. Now, advocates are asking for your help as they begin phase III.

The memorial is located off Homestead Road, near the Seymour Center and the Southern Human Services Center. First proposed by former Chapel Hill Town Council member Jim Merritt, organizers broke ground on the memorial in 2017 and have been working to build and expand it ever since.

Construction is planned for four phases, funded largely with private donations. With the final phases still to be completed, organizers are asking residents to purchase paver bricks to honor veterans in their own families.

“If you have a veteran in your family, either living or deceased, that you would like to remember with their name inscribed in a brick at our veterans’ memorial, please take the time to make that order now,” said Orange County Commissioner Renee Price.

Initial fundraising for the memorial began on Veterans Day in 2015. While construction is not yet complete, the memorial is currently open to the public.
