The highlight of Thursday is the appointment of the vacant commissioner’s position. The seat has been open since former commissioner Mark Dorosin announced he accepted a position at the Florida A&M University College of Law. Dorosin’s term officially ended July 31.
The four candidates being considered to fill the position are Rani Dasi, Marilyn Carter, Anna Richards and Penny Rich. Because the seat is a partisan position, all candidates had to be registered Democrats and live in District 1. The appointed candidate will serve until December 2022, with the seat being up for election next spring.
Also on the agenda for Thursday, the BOCC will receive a presentation from the County Elections Advisory Committee. The group was charged with examining the county’s election procedures. Recommendations in the committee’s presentation include changing representative voting into a district-only system. The changes would create seven single-member districts instead of the current two-district system with several at-large seats.
