Current Orange County Commissioner Sally Greene announced Wednesday she will seek re-election this spring. Greene will run in the Orange County Democratic primary for the at-large seat on the Orange County Board of Commissioners.

This would be Greene’s second term in office, after she was first elected to the seat in 2018.

“During my first term, I have followed through on promises,” she said in her campaign announcement. “I hope to be elected to a second term in order to build on the experience I’ve gained and collaborate with my colleagues and you in the community to continue to improve the lives of others. It is an honor to serve.”

Three other commissioner’s terms are set to expire this spring. In District 1, both Jamezetta Bedford’s and Anna Richard’s seats will be up for grabs alongside Commissioner Earl Mckee’s in District 2.

In August, Greene was recognized by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners as an Outstanding Commissioner for her work developing a plan to distribute an estimated $750 million across the state from a recent opioid settlement.

“Counties are on the front lines of this terrible epidemic,” she said. “They are in the best position to create effective treatment programs and to prevent more unnecessary deaths. ”

Greene’s work on this issue granted Orange County an estimated $7.9 million over the next 18 years for families affected by the opioid crisis.

Other areas of focus for Greene include housing and community development, criminal justice reform, and homeless support. Greene was a key player in the in the creation of the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness and currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Community Home Trust.

A native of Gilmer, Texas, Greene has called Orange County home for three decades. Prior to her election to the board of commissioners in 2018, she served three terms on the Chapel Hill Town Council.
