Orange County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Jamezetta Bedford Crisis Care Center Thursday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. The new facility will be on Waterstone Drive in Hillsborough, next to the UNC Hospitals Hillsborough campus.
“This center represents the kind of compassionate, community-focused care our residents deserve,” said Jean Hamilton, chair of the Orange County Board of Commissioners. “Every person who walks through these doors should be met with dignity, understanding, and hope. That has always been our charge, and it will remain Commissioner Bedford’s legacy.”
The building is named in honor of the late Jamezetta Bedford, who had served on the Board of Commissioners until she died unexpectedly June 21 from complications following a medical procedure. Five days later, Bedford’s colleagues voted to give final approval to the new facility. In September, the Board unanimously voted to name the facility in honor of Bedford, who Orange County said “played an essential leadership role in developing the Crisis Care Center.”
The facility will measure in at more than 21,000 square feet and will include both a 24/7, walk-in behavioral health urgent care unit (serving patients ages 4 and older) and a 16-bed facility-based crisis unit (serving adults 18 and older). The facility also plans to provide a peer-living room and a community behavioral health resource library. In a release, Orange County noted the project’s total budget to be $29,412,035.
After the groundbreaking, Orange County estimates construction will be completed in winter 2027 and that operations will begin in spring 2028.
“This facility reflects our community’s commitment to ensuring that people in crisis have access to timely and appropriate support,” said Orange County Manager Travis Myren. “Commissioner Bedford’s leadership and passion helped make this vision possible, and we are honored to carry that work forward.”
Those who hope to attend the groundbreaking are encouraged to carpool due to limited parking availability. Additional parking, as well as a shuttle service, will be provided at Durham Technical Community College’s Orange County campus, located at 525 College Park Road in Hillsborough. The shuttle will begin service at 9 a.m.
