Leadership of the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce recently shared its support of a proposed industrial project that has drawn much community attention.
CEO of the Chamber Kim Tesoro sent a letter to the Orange County Board of Commissioners on Monday voicing her organization’s interest in the Research Triangle Logistics Park development. She said the proposed 160-acre development classified as a light industrial project presents an opportunity to bring the county significant tax revenue.
“Development of an area previously designated as an Economic Development District, is of vital importance,” Tesoro wrote. “Orange County is renowned for employment opportunity in certain segments, those that require significant post-secondary education. But it is necessary that we now face the fact that in the coming months, we will lose many hospitality positions in Orange County, and as such, it is vitally important that we support a development that will offer positions with minimal training requirements.”
The Chamber CEO also said she believes the Unified Development Ordinance, which is created to specify physical development of property, is thorough and will protect nearby residents from the development being particularly imposing on their lives.
The Board of County Commissioners held a public hearing Tuesday about the Research Triangle Logistics Park, which drew many community members to share their thoughts. The board has set another public hearing on the matter for next Tuesday after so many people signed up to speak on the topic. Several protests have been held in downtown Hillsborough to advocate against the proposal, which aims to exist on undeveloped land between Interstate 40 and Davis Road just outside town limits.
The Orange County government has also generated a Frequently Asked Questions packet about the project due to the widespread interest. That document can be found on the county’s website.
