The first meeting for the Orange County Climate Council is being held on Tuesday in Chapel Hill. The council is a joint effort between local governments and groups meant to address ways to combat climate change at the local level.

Orange County Commissioner Mark Marcoplos spoke recently with WCHL’s Aaron Keck. He said many community organizations will be represented on the council.

“We have almost every slot filled with representatives from local governments, from NAACPs, from Durham Tech and from school systems with youth representatives,” said Marcoplos. “I’m really excited about the prospects, and I know it’s going to do some good work when we put our heads together and share what we know.”

Despite the first meeting being this week, the council is still looking for one more member, specifically an at-large member who is a resident of Hillsborough. The council is asking those applying for the seat to complete the advisory board application on the town’s website. The deadline to file an application is 5 p.m. on September 30. The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners will make an appointment for the position at its regular meeting on October 14.

The first meeting for the Orange County Climate Council will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Southern Human Services Center on Homestead Road.
