Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) will receive a $20,000 grant from the national nonprofit Petco Love next week.

The grant is in support of the OCAS Working Barn Cat program. Those cats are often not socialized enough to be adopted into an indoor home but make for great workers in places like barns and stables. Additionally working barn cats can be used to better control rodent populations.

“This grant will be used to support the Working Barn Cat Program, which helps to trap, sterilize and return free-roaming cats found at farms, stables and in other rural settings belonging to Orange County residents,” OCAS said in a release. “These cats will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and licensed. All of these services are provided at no cost to Orange County residents who have cats that qualify for the program. The Working Barn Cat Program is part of a broader effort to more humanely and proactively manage free-roaming cats in Orange County.”

Petco Love was founded in 1999 and has invested $330 million into pet adoption and finding forever homes for pets nationwide.

OCAS will receive its grant investment at a ceremony held Tuesday, June 28 at 11 a.m. at the Petco located at 1800 East Franklin Street.
