The Town of Hillsborough may soon see a change to its noise ordinance thanks to complaints made to the town this week.
At its first meeting of the year, the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners discussed the concern from residents about updating the ordinance to address noise from a local business.
Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver spoke with 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck about the matter, saying the dispute is rising from music at the Hot Tin Roof bar on Margaret Lane.
“We’ve got a spot in town that’s causing some tension between some neighbors and [the] business,” said Weaver. “We’re just trying to hear from everybody and sort out what needs to happen next.”
Weaver said many people spoke at the meeting about a potential amendment to the current ordinance, which was enacted four years ago. She said the issue stems from bass being heard by neighbors, but the ordinance measures a different scale of decibels. Representatives from the Hot Tin Roof, which regularly hosts bands, shared the efforts they’ve made to reduce the disturbance for neighbors.
Still, Weaver expects an amendment to be made so it can properly address the different scales of decibels.
“The ordinance just isn’t accounting for the kind of noise that’s carrying and bothering people late at night,” Weaver said. “I expect there will be some sort of adjustment and the chief of police will come back to the board in a few weeks with some possible alternatives.”
More information can be found about the Board of Commissioners meeting on the town’s website.
