Eleven people died from the flu last week, the deadliest week of the season so far, North Carolina health officials said Thursday.

Last week, the N,C, Department of Health and Human Services reported nine people died from the flu, including the state’s first pediatric death of the season.

For the year, the death toll from the flu in North Carolina is at 33 after 15 weeks of the 2019-2020 flu season, compared to 23 at the same time last season.

According to the DHHS weekly report, 21 of the 33 deaths have been to residents aged 65 and older. Of the more than 200 flu-related deaths logged in North Carolina last season, more than half were people age 65 and older. The age range with the second-highest amount of deaths is the 50-64 years-old range with seven flu-related deaths.

The current flu season runs through May 26.
