The Town of Chapel Hill is set to embark on its latest updates to park facilities on Monday, as the tennis courts at Hargraves Park are going to be resurfaced.

A release from the local government said the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department will begin the work on Monday, November 6 — which will require the tennis courts to be closed for several months as the resurfacing is completed. According to the town, adding a new surface to the courts will not only create a new, accessible path to the facility from the parking lot, but will also improving drainage issues they currently suffer.

Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation gathered community input and ideas before taking on the project, according to the department director Atuya Cornwell.

“We are delighted to resurface the Hargraves Park tennis courts,” he said. “Feedback from local community members enables us to ensure that the community can enjoy these courts for years to come in Chapel Hill.”

The work is among several changes the Town of Chapel Hill is making to its tennis courts. Many owned by the local government have been seeing increased action in recent years due to the rise of pickleball, which is driving more interest in facility improvement. Ephesus Park, which has both tennis and pickleball courts, saw some minor updates done in 2022 to improve drainage. Hargraves is next, with reconstructing the 45-year-old courts at Cedar Falls Park also on the town’s to-do list.

Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation said it expects the resurfacing of the Hargraves Park tennis courts to be completed by early April 2024.
