Chapel Hill is celebrating the bicentennial anniversary of its town government on Wednesday.

On November 20, 1819, the North Carolina General Assembly by appointing Chapel Hill’s first town commissioners, officially creating a local government. To celebrate, the town has been holding various events to examine and reflect on its history for the last year.

A birthday reception for the town will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the first floor conference room of Chapel Hill Town Hall, located on 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The celebration is open to the public and will features guests like former members of the Town Council, former mayors, state legislators, UNC leaders and the 1819/2019 steering committee. There will be brief remarks from town staff and representatives, opportunities for attendees to share memories, the opening of a time capsule from 25 years ago and birthday cake.
