The future of the American Legion property will come before the Chapel Hill Town Council on Monday night.

The town entered into an agreement with the American Legion to purchase the approximately 36-acre property for nearly $8 million in late 2016.

Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger said there are already a lot of ideas being put forward for the future of the property.

“We’re looking to council and the public to explore those ideas and come up with a process for the future for that [property],” Hemminger said.

The sale has not officially closed, but Hemminger said it was important to have the framework in place to being planning conversations.

“We wanted to be able to come back to the public and the council with ideas for a process and have an agreement of what that process might look like,” Hemminger said. “So that we’re ready to go once we close.”

It is safe to assume a portion of the property will be devoted to developing a larger park area. But when agreeing to purchase the acreage, some council members expressed a desire to sell off other portions of the property in order to recoup some of the purchase price.

The Town Council is scheduled to meet at seven o’clock on Monday night at Chapel Hill Town Hall.
