A public hearing is scheduled Tuesday night for a new preschool being proposed in Carrboro.
The Wildflower Learning Community has big hopes for a new space after a fire engulfed the school’s temporary facility earlier this year.
The fire occurred early in the morning of April 25 at a barn on Old Fayetteville Road in Carrboro. No children or staff were injured in the fire, but two goats were killed.
The school was operating out of that facility for the academic year while finalizing plans for a new school constructed on Damascus Church Road. Now, the Town of Carrboro is set to hold a public hearing on the new proposal Tuesday night. “Wildflower offers community, support, a space to reconnect with nature and new friends,” according to the school’s website.
The plans call for three shipping containers to make up a 1,750 square-foot school building on a portion of a nearly 16-acre property, which is surrounded by vacant lots, a single-family residence and Merritt’s Gravel Pit.
In addition to the facility, the project documents say that a driveway, parking area with room for 14 spaces and a septic field will have to be constructed. Town documents show that school officials plan to leave for seven forested acres on the property.
Documents say that a neighborhood meeting was held on May 9 and that no neighbors attended the meeting.
The request is asking for Carrboro to rezone the property from watershed residential to allow for a child care facility with livestock use.
The public hearing on the new child care facility is scheduled for the Carrboro Board of Aldermen’s final meeting before the summer break Tuesday night beginning at 7:30.
The investigation into the fire at the previous facility is ongoing and there was no imminent announcement pending, as of last update from the town in mid-June.
