Carrboro’s Board of Aldermen meetings are kicking off a little bit earlier this year. Starting at this week’s meeting, proceedings will begin at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m..

The meetings will remain in Town Hall on West Main Street.

Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle said an earlier start time will allow the board more time to focus on the issues at hand as well as community feedback.

It’s an idea they have been toying around with for some time, Lavelle said.

“We’re trying to find a way to maybe not stay as late or maybe to get out at the time we’d like to get out, which is typically 10 o’clock,” Lavelle said. “And when you start at 7:30 and want to get out by 10, sometimes that doesn’t allow very much time.”

And time is especially important this month, when town government begins considering its priorities and budget for the coming year, Lavelle said.

“It’s very early in the year that we start to have conversation around what are our priorities for the budget,” the mayor said. “And the town manager starts meeting with the department heads and starts to ask the general public, what kind of priorities or what kind of additions would you like to see in this year’s budget as far as programs and so forth.”
