Last night, many Carrboro residents were woken by a train horn that continued to blare loudly throughout the night.
The train horn started to run at around 10 p.m. on Monday night. A quick search for “carrboro train” on Twitter showed that many residents were upset about this issue.
“Has the #Carrboro freight train gone rogue? I don’t recall it normally running at 10:30pm,” wrote user Rachell Underhill. “And the horn has been blowing almost nonstop for over an hour. What is happening?”

The issue was clarified today, with UNC Campus Enterprises tweeting out that an arm at an intersection in Carrboro malfunctioned while a train from UNC approached. Because train horns sound automatically at intersections, it continued to sound until the arm was repaired.
Last night an arm at an intersection in @CarrboroTownGov malfunctioned while a train from #UNC approached. Unfortunately train horns automatically sound at intersections so it continued until the arm was repaired. We apologize for the noise but appreciate our neighbors’ patience!
