UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill was one of three UNC Health hospitals and 14 in the state of North Carolina to receive a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The CMS system measures hospital quality and safety.

“UNC Health strives to lead the way in providing the very best care to the people of North Carolina,” said UNC Health CEO Dr. Wesley Burks. “It’s the heart of our mission and the daily focus of our dedicated teammates. We’re especially proud to see several of our locations recognized with such high star rankings from CMS.”

UNC Hospitals maintained its five-star rating from the previous CMS study. In addition, UNC Health Rex in Raleigh also maintained its five-star rating and UNC Health Pardee in Hendersonville improved from four stars to five.

CMS uses “a wide range of publicly available data,” including mortality, safety of care, readmissions and patient experience, according to a release from UNC Health.

UNC Hospitals has received numerous awards recently. In July, U.S. News & World Report ranked it as the No. 2 hospital in the state of North Carolina, and it was also included among Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals” list in March.
