Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools has sent out an email to staff and families informing them of the current protocol and precautions in place pertaining to the coronavirus situation.

CHCCS said they are working closely with the Orange County Health Department daily to keep informed on how the coronavirus situation is affecting people locally, nationally and internationally.

“The well-being of our students and staff is, and always will be, our top priority,” CHCCS said in their email.

At present, there have been no confirmed cases in North Carolina. The risk for COVID-19 (coronavirus) in North Carolina and the United States remains low. Nevertheless, CHCCS said they are implementing various health measures in their schools as a precaution.

CHCCS said they have a full time registered nurse in every school and are promoting proper vaccination for students – including an annual flu shot.

To further promote general health and well-being, as well as precautions against COVID-19, CHCCS said they are committed to monitoring illness in the school setting, reporting communicable diseases to the Orange County Health Department and teaching staff and students disease prevention.

CHCCS said they will provide referrals and recommendations to parents concerning health care and inform student, teachers and families about when it is appropriate for a student who has been ill to return to school.

The CHCCS’s email to student’s families and staff also detailed some precautionary measures the community can take to decrease the risk of contracting COVID-19.

Some of these measures include washing hands often with soap and water, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands and staying home while you are sick and avoiding close contact with others.

CHCCS will offer a community session in the coming weeks to discuss how they support students and families in reducing absenteeism due to chronic illness. This will include a brief overview of health precautions as it pertains to COVID-19.
