One person is dead and four others are injured after a fire at a duplex residence north of downtown Hillsborough during the early hours of Monday.

Orange County Emergency Services said its department received a call before 1 a.m. about a structure fire at 818 Faucette Mill Road. Sheriff’s deputies arrived ahead of several rural fire department units and found part of the two-story building “heavily involved in fire,” according to a release Monday afternoon. Orange County said sheriff’s deputies attempted to remove as many occupants as possible and provided medical aid until EMS units arrived.

“We would like to express our profound appreciation to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office personnel who took decisive action that ultimately saved multiple lives,” said Orange County Emergency Services Director Kirby Saunders. “We also extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The Emergency Services Department will work with our community partners to coordinate support for the survivors in the days ahead.”

Monday’s release said three of the injured people were transported to the UNC Medical Center for further treatment. As of the county’s update, their conditions are unknown to the public. The fourth injury was to a first responder, who Orange County said was evaluated and released from the UNC Medical Center. Meanwhile, the deceased victim was taken to Raleigh for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.

Orange County Emergency Services said the county fire marshal is continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire, with the Office of the State Fire Marshal assisting.
