Carrboro residents who see smoke from a stretch of Old Highway 86 on Friday should not fear: it will be coming from a training exercise, according to the Town of Carrboro.

The local government shared a release on Wednesday alerting the community that its fire and rescue department will be conducting a live burn at the Carrboro Public Works property at 7917 Old NC-86. The town said the training will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Additionally, the live burn will present an opportunity for research. Carrboro said researchers from NC State University, Baylor University, Florida International University and RTI International will be on site on Friday. Some of the research includes examining carcinogen exposures, studying protective firefighter gear and measuring the rehabilitation of firefighters’ health exposed to high temperatures.

The Town of Carrboro said the fire training session will follow protocols put in place by the National Fire Protection Association and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.

The full release from the town government can be found on Carrboro’s website.
