At its meeting May 26, the Chapel Hill Town Council held a public hearing to discuss the proposed Putt Putt Fun Center. Located north of Carraway Village and just off of Interstate 40, the proposed development would include indoor and outdoor recreation facilities like go-karts, mini golf and an arcade.

The site for the development is roughly 19 acres of land, which is currently vacant. The site plan includes a self-storage facility and indoor recreation center, as well as go-kart track and mini golf course outdoors.

Within the indoor recreation center, potential amenities include an arcade, mini bowling, laser tag and a ropes course.

If approved, the development would be located on Chapel Point Road – a new road off of Eubanks Road.

During previous meetings, the council raised concerns about how the Fun Center could impact the residents of Carraway Village regarding noise and light pollution.

Jared Martinson of MHAworks Architects said the development team reworked their initial plans to address the council’s concerns.

“The golf course is going to utilize natural grasses and water elements to help balance rain water management,” Martinson said. “Lighting through that space is going to be approximately 28-feet in height and is going to be focused on downlighting the site amenities and pathways.”

Dan Jewell of Coulter Jewell Thames Architects echoed Martinson’s response on changes made to the development plans.

“The mini golf and go-karts have been moved away from the property to create some separation,” Jewell said. “We’re adding an additional layer of landscaping. Additionally, we are committing that the go-karts will be electric so there will be no noise. All electric – no noise and no emissions.”

General hours of operation are currently set for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. during peak summer season. Weekend hours could extend until 11 p.m.

The Chapel Hill Town Council will consider approving the development of the Putt Putt Center at its meeting on Wednesday June 23.
