UNC Police arrested an armed individual on Tuesday, according to an Alert Carolina.
According to a spokesperson for the university police department, a UNC Hospitals security officer observed an individual sleeping in his car in the Campus Health parking lot around 6 a.m. When approached, authorities found multiple firearms in the vehicle.
Police and arrest reports state Joseph John Radomski III, 39, had six guns in his vehicle, including two rifles and a shotgun. The report also stated Radomski had several rounds of ammunition in the vehicle, including one 20-round clip.
In an Alert Carolina message sent out to the UNC campus community at 11:26 a.m., authorities said “the individual was immediately taken into police custody and no injuries were reported.”
Under state law, possessing or carrying a firearm on the property of a school or university is a Class I felony.
According to UNC Police, Radomski was turned over to the Hillsborough magistrate on Tuesday morning. He was released on a written promise to appear in court on Wednesday morning for the felony charge.
Campus community members can report crimes or suspicious activity to UNC Police by calling 911, as well as using the Silent Witness Form on the department’s website or the Carolina Ready Safety App. For students struggling with anxiety, the university’s Counseling and Psychological Services can be reached at 919-966-3658.
