An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy shot an armed suspect during the attempted serving of a felony warrant on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.

A statement from the office said shortly before 6 p.m. on Saturday, Orange County deputies arrived in the 1300 block of Carolina Loop, which is a road east of Hillsborough’s town limits. While attempting to serve the warrant, the male subject reportedly fled the residence and “brandished a firearm at a deputy he encountered outside,” according to the sheriff’s office. At that time, the deputy shot his weapon and struck the man.

Sunday’s statement said Orange County EMS personnel transported the injured person to a nearby hospital for treatment and his current medical status is not known.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said, as is required for officer-involved shootings, the State Bureau of Investigations is reviewing Saturday’s incident. The investigation is active and ongoing as of Sunday morning, with the case being taken over by the SBI.
