In October, 82-year-old Hillsborough community member and Home Depot employee Gary Rasor was working outside the garden section of the Hampton Pointe store. Video footage shows he tried to confront a man attempting to leave Home Depot without paying for several power washers, but the thief shoved Rasor to the ground. The elderly man was injured by the subsequent fall, later dying on November 30 from complications of those injuries.

On Tuesday, the Hillsborough Police Department said it’s arrested the man investigators believe is responsible for Rasor’s death.

A release from the department said officers with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Raleigh-Durham Safe Streets Task Force took Terry McMillian Jr. of Durham into custody. Hillsborough Police said McMillian, a 26-year-old, is charged with first-degree murder and robbery stemming from the incident on October 18. McMillian is being held without bond.

“We are glad we were able to bring some closure to this case and are very appreciative of the family’s patience and support,” Hillsborough Police Chief Duane Hampton said. “This was a team effort involving many of our local criminal justice partners, the SBI and the public.”

Among those consulted, according to Tuesday’s release, was the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, who police said supported the charging decision prior to McMillian being taken into custody.

Hillsborough Police sought the public’s help in identifying suspects in Rasor’s assault and subsequent death in December, offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who came forward with information. Tuesday’s release, however, said the investigation into the theft is still ongoing.
