The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has arrested and charged Larry Earl Steward of Durham in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins at local nature parks and trails.

Steward, 51, is charged with felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle with theft, three counts of misdemeanor injury to personal property, felony ID theft, and felony breaking and entering of a motor vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office had shared a photo of Steward and his vehicle in late April, saying it believed he was responsible for break-ins at Hollow Rock Nature Park on April 9 and April 23. Hollow Rock is located on Erwin Road, near the Orange-Durham County line. According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, evidence connects Steward to those break-ins and ones at the Johnston Mill Nature Preserve on Turkey Farm Road and the New Hope Creek Trail on Mt. Sinai Road, also on April 23.

Steward is being held without bond and will appear in court on Friday afternoon. He also has pending charges in Durham County.

The Sheriff’s Office urges trail and park users not to bring valuables with them to nature parks.
