Authorities have made an arrest after a short pursuit in Charlotte related to a Chapel Hill homicide last weekend.

Police say 19-year-old Alexis Shenell Joyner, of Durham, was arrested by members of the US Marshals Service on Tuesday and has been charged with first-degree murder.

Joyner was charged after 21-year-old Edward Young III was shot at the Red Roof Inn on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard around 1:20 Sunday morning. Young was transported to Duke University Hospital for treatment before dying as a result of his injuries.

Authorities traced the suspect to Charlotte, where the Marshals Service “observed Joyner get into the rear passenger seat of a vehicle” leaving a residence.

The driver then led authorities on a three-mile pursuit when law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle, according to a release, before the vehicle crashed into a tree. Joyner then fled the scene on foot, according to police, before being apprehended.

Joyner is now being held without bond in the Orange County Jail.
