Four people are facing charges in Chapel Hill after being spotted attempting to break into parked vehicles this week.

The Chapel Hill Police Department shared a release Thursday saying officers arrested three Durham men and a Greensboro resident shortly before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

19-year-old Daquan Lamarcus Hart, 20-year-old Jordan Keyshawn Bey, and 19-year-old Jayvian Clarence Pegram each face charges of misdemeanor attempted breaking entering motor vehicle and misdemeanor conspiracy. 20-year-old Javari Deshawn Jacobs, the Greensboro resident, faces one charge of misdemeanor conspiracy. Hart faces an additional charge of possession of a stolen firearm from a warrant.

Police said the four men were arrested after they pulled on vehicle door handles in the parking deck at Flemington Road and Glen Lennox Drive, which is part of the Glen Lennox community.

The arrests come as Chapel Hill Police report a significant uptick in vehicle break-ins around town this year. In its Thursday release, the department shared has received 275 reports of breaking and entering vehicles. At this time in 2022, the department had received 181 such reports. In many of these cases, according to police, the vehicles are left unlocked or have valuables visible from outside the car.

The Community Services Unit of Chapel Hill Police shared tips to residents to deter such break-ins. One of the simplest is locking vehicles when stepping away. Police also suggested not leaving purses, wallets, phones or other valuables in cars, or at least placing them out of sight if you must keep them inside the vehicle. The release also suggested that gun owners never leave any firearms in their vehicles.

Another theme of the vehicle break-ins is certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles are being taken, according to Chapel Hill Police. The department is offered free steering wheel locks for drivers of those vehicles, which can be picked up at the Police Headquarters at 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard during business hours.
