The Chapel Hill Police Department is warning Chapel Hill residents and visitors about a recent spree of catalytic converter thefts.

The department tweeted over the weekend it is investigating multiple reports of stolen catalytic converters from multiple areas of town.

Eight converters were stolen between December 5 and December 17 from Eubanks Road, Dogwood Acres Drive, East Franklin Street, Weaver Dairy Road and Highway 86.

Ways to try and prevent thefts like these are parking in well-lit and populated areas, according to the tweet. A spokesperson for Chapel Hill Police say victims of a theft may notice their vehicle sounding louder than normal while running or the failure of emissions tests.

A similar spree of catalytic converter thefts in Chapel Hill occurred in February 2018. The parts are valuable because of platinum, palladium and rhodium within the emissions control devices.
