A Chapel Hill man has been charged with five sex crimes with a child under the age of 12, according to multiple outlets.
Reports cite a release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office saying 62-year-old Jeffrey Behun, of 2722 Damascus Church Road, has been arrested. Behun is facing four counts of felony indecent liberties with a child and one count of felony statutory sexual offense.
The release said the incidents are alleged to have occurred in Orange and Chatham counties with a single victim under the age of 12.
Behun is being held under a $20,000 secured bond and is set to appear in court on January 23.
This is why we should not depend on a sex offender registry to keep our children safe as it is NOT the silver bullet that parents hope for. Per the NCMEC there are 859,500 men, women and children registrants. The “crimes” range from urinating in public (indecent exposure), sexting, incest, mooning, exposure, false accusations by a soon-to-be ex-wife, angry girlfriend, or spiteful student, viewing abusive OR suggestive images of anyone 18 years old or younger, playing doctor, prostitution, solicitation, Romeo and Juliet consensual sexual dating relationships, rape, endangering the welfare of a child, the old bate-n-switch internet stings (taking sometimes 12 months before a person steps over the line) and many others.
The public needs to decide if they want to continue to focus on those who, for the most part, are one time offenders or if they see a greater need to fund programs like “Stop It Now” that teaches about grooming behaviors and other things in their Circles of Safety.
