Alamance County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Burlington man in a year-long investigation of a sexual assault case stemming from a Chapel Hill behavioral health center.

Authorities from the sheriff’s office said it arrested and charged Timothy Lynn Alford, 53, of Burlington with felony second degree rape of a disabled adult on Monday. Alford also received a charge of misdemeanor sexual battery.

A release from the office said a sexual assault complaint was received on August 21, 2018 involving a 19-year-old female disabled adult. The victim was seen at UNC Hospitals and completed a sexual assault kit. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit conducted interviews with the behavioral health center, where the victim was a client and Alford was an employee. Following testing of the kit and investigators’ interviews, authorities obtained a search warrant of Alford’s residence to collect DNA.

A warrant for Alford’s arrest was issued December 31, 2019. In it, it says there is probable cause Alford inappropriately and forcibly touched the victim.

Alford is being held under a $75,000 secured bond at the Alamance County Jail.
