**UPDATE: Chapel Hill Police say a suspect is now in custody: 24-year-old Alagi Isaasik Jagne faces multiple charges including robbery with a dangerous weapon, second degree kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon. The original report is below.**

Chapel Hill Police are investigating an armed robbery on Wednesday that took place at a gas station on a high-traffic street corner.

A spokesperson for the police department confirmed to Chapelboro around 12:30 p.m. that an armed robbery at the Circle K gas station on East Franklin Street and Estes Drive was under investigation, with a lone suspect being sought. The incident took place just before noon, with the suspect described as a man who was wearing a black hoodie, gray pants, and a Ghostface mask from the film series “Scream.”

According to a Town of Chapel Hill alert released shortly afterward, the suspect displayed a gun during the robbery but no injuries were reported from the incident.

News of the robbery sent nearby Estes Hills Elementary School and Phillips Middle School into “secure mode” for roughly an hour. Families of students at the two schools were alerted to the change in campus status around 12:20 p.m. — and the mode was lifted before 1:30 p.m. Secure mode is a step below the full lockdown of a campus, but requires students and staff to get inside a school building and to lock outside doors.

Police encouraged anyone who may have information about the robbery or the suspect to call 911 or contact the Chapel Hill Police Department directly at 919-968-2760. Additionally, those who wish to anonymously share information through Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers by calling 919-942-7515 or visiting its website here.
