****UPDATE: Orange County Health Department said Wednesday the testing location for October 7 is now set to be in the Nash Parking Lot behind the Newman Catholic Student Center. Those looking to be tested for coronavirus should enter the lot via Wilson Street.****
The Orange County Health Department announced changes to its weekly testing schedule for October, with COVID-19 testing now set to alternate between two Chapel Hill sites.
The county has conducted free coronavirus testing at the R7 Parking Lot off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Chapel Hill every week since early September. Now, that testing will alternate between the parking lot and the Newman Catholic Student Center at 218 Pittsboro Street.
According to a release from the health department, testing this upcoming Wednesday will be held at Newman Catholic, which has previously hosted a free county-run testing event. Unlike the R7 Parking Lot testing, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., this testing last from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and will now happen every other week in October. The weeks in-between, Orange County’s free testing will return to the R7 Parking Lot, meaning Wednesday, October 14, will be held at the lot across the street from Flyleaf Books and The Root Cellar.
Registration for the COVID-19 testing is completed on site and is a nasal swab test. Community members tested will be sent their results via text message within two or three days.
Orange County Health Department has worked with StarMed Healthcare to bring these free coronavirus tests to the community. Other monthly testing events include on the third Saturday of every month at Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Hurdle Mills and the fourth Saturday of every month at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill.
As of Monday, Orange County reported 2,760 cases and 57 deaths among county residents since the pandemic began and reported a 36-case increase from the day before.
