Market and Moss — described as a seasonal new American restaurant and bar — is scheduled to open on Thursday, October 22 in Southern Village in Chapel Hill.
In a press release, owner Annie Johnston said the food will be “vibrant, seasonal, and creative while maintaining approachability.”
“We want people to have an amazing experience while they’re here enjoying food that also leaves them feeling great when they leave,” Johnston said. “Our aim is for guests to return regularly to experience bright flavors and refreshing combinations, and discover how exciting seasonal eating can be.”
Initial dinner service will be available on the patio or for takeout Tuesday through Saturday.
According to the press release, Market and Moss will “emphasize seafood options like octopus with salsa verde and gremolata, seasonal produce-driven preparations like grilled plum and burrata with white balsamic honey, and around a dozen small plates. For those who prefer a starter and entree, Market and Moss also offers several entrees and nightly seafood features.”
The space where Market and Moss is opening (700 Market Street) was previously filled Pazzo Trattoria and Pizzeria and was bought out by the owners of La Vita Dolce cafe — also located in Southern Village. Erin Pacheco, who has worked with Johnston for five years as manager of La Vita Dolce, is Director of Operations at Market and Moss.
After Pazzo Trattoria and Pizzeria moved out, the space was renovated, led by Catherine French Design, to transform it into “an organic European setting with modern influence and a warm and welcoming ambiance.”
“We wanted it to have a welcoming, natural European feel with contemporary touches. Like our food and service, it’s elevated but not pretentious or overly manipulated. Above all it’s warm and welcoming,” said Johnston in the release.
For Johnston, the opening of Market and Moss represents a full circle. Her first job in the restaurant industry was at Pazzo Trattoria and Pizzera as a backwait serving water and bussing tables.
Despite complications from the COVID-19 pandemic, those behind Market and Moss said they couldn’t be more excited about its opening.
“Market and Moss is a place to come after work for a quick drink and bite to eat, a romantic dinner, a place to gather with friends, or to celebrate that special occasion,” said Executive Chef Bryan Keller. “Most importantly though, we want to leave you wanting to come back for more. With a menu focused on fresh vibrancy you won’t go home looking for a couch. Instead we hope that you will leave feeling satiated and excited about trying the rest of the menu.”
Guests can order online or by phone for takeout or contactless curbside pickup. Additionally, patio reservations can be made by calling 919-929-8226 or visiting marketandmoss.com.
