Raleigh-based Gizmo Brew Works is set to open a second location in a heralded location in downtown Chapel Hill. The brewery tweeted recently “Gizmo+Franklin Street=Spring 2019” in the first notice that a new venture was in the works.

The Triangle Business Journal was first to report on the plans for a new taproom in the former Rathskeller space on Franklin Street.

The Rat, as it was more commonly known, was a staple of the Chapel Hill food scene for decades before closing in 2007.

Gizmo appears to be aiming for a spring 2019 launch of the new taproom. Founder of Gizmo Bryan Williams said in an interview with the News & Observer that they were planning to add a stage for live music and installing multiple TVs throughout the space.

Gizmo launched in April 2013, according to its website, and has grown into a key piece of the craft beer market that has been growing across the Triangle.
