Movie theaters are in a state of flux amid the coronavirus pandemic, including North Carolina, where they were only recently permitted to reopen in Phase 3. One Chapel Hill movie theater announced to the community in a special way it will not be returning films to its screens.

The Regal Timberlyne movie theater off Banks Drive in Chapel Hill shared a message on its marquee thanking its patrons for 27 years of service. The six-screen theater becomes one of many Regal Cinemas forced to close indefinitely due to the financial crunch of few new blockbuster films and a lack of audiences in the U.S.

While the COVID-19 pandemic caused the theater to close its doors in March, the property had previously been listed for sale by Foundry Commercial earlier in 2020. Cary-based developers recently submitted a concept plan to the Town of Chapel Hill’s Community Design Commission indicating the space may soon be renovated to hold medical offices.

Regal Timberlyne in Chapel Hill recently used phrases from filmmaker Kevin Smith and a song from ‘The Sound of Music’ to say goodbye to its patrons.

Other movie theaters in Chapel Hill include The Chelsea Theater, the Lumina Theater, The Varsity Theater, Silverspot Cinemas and the under-construction Drive-in Theater at Carraway Village.
