The Italian restaurant 411 West in Chapel Hill has closed its doors for the next month to address utility and building repairs.

The business, which is located at 411 West Franklin Street, intermittently closed in the first week of July during the onset of issues, but the extent of problems with its piping and plumbing caused ownership to fully close ahead of lengthy work around the building and street.

Greg Overbeck of the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group confirmed the temporary closure to Chapelboro, saying pipes flowing water from the restaurant’s kitchen to the drain were backing up and led utility crews to do a check. Ultimately, the workers found severe issues with old pipes connecting the building to sewers under Franklin Street that will require full replacement.

According to Overbeck, that will eventually include overnight work on Franklin and significant disruption to 411 West’s space — leading him and his fellow owners to decide to close the restaurant for the duration of the repairs. Overbeck said initial estimates on the project will take about a month, and 411 West aims to reopen to patrons in August.

The sign posted on the 411 West door for customers, explaining the temporary closure and ongoing maintenance.

The closure, though, will provide the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group to make additional changes inside the 411 West Franklin Street space. With the kitchen closed, the equipment will be moved out to replace the floor and pipes, and a new color of paint will be added to refresh the dining area.

“We’re trying to look on the bright side of things, and use this to get everything back to A+ shape,” said Overbeck.

In the meantime, Overbeck says all the other Chapel Hill Restaurant Group businesses — Squid’s in Chapel Hill and Page Road Grill, Lu Lu Bang Bang, and Mez Contemporary Mexican off of Page Road in Durham — are open and operating normally for customers.
