Hillsborough community members will soon have a way to show off their creativity as part of an upcoming mural installation in the town.

The Orange County Arts Commission shared a release on Tuesday announcing a partnership with Hillsborough artist Carlos González García called the #LoveHillsborough Community Art Project. The public art project will blend García’s expertise of mosaics with the community’s own designs. The release said the mural will be installed on the westward facing wall on the ground floor of the Eno River Public Parking Deck in Downtown Hillsborough, directly behind Weaver Street Market.

The arts commission is looking for submissions of small heart-shaped mosaics made by Hillsborough community members, which García will then install into a larger design fitting the theme.

With room for approximately 150 mosaics on the parking deck wall, the Orange County Arts Commission is asking for interested people to register and only to submit one mosaic per household. Following registration, community members will receive a link to an instructional video from García explaining how to create a mosaic. Written instructions can also be found on his website.

The commission and artist suggest Hillsborough residents use hard and non-natural materials when creating the mosaics to avoid them eroding over time. Ceramic, glass, plastic and old jewelry are some examples given of good materials, while they suggest avoiding cotton, fabric or plant materials.

According to the release, additional materials needed include a 16-inch by 16-inch sheet of paper, a 17-inch by 17-inch piece of fiberglass drywall tape, a 16-inch by 16-inch piece of clear plastic vinyl and glue. The arts commission said to contact its offices if community members need help getting some of these materials.

NC Mosaics, which García is involved with, plans to start a professional Mosaic School at the Eno Arts Mill in Hillsborough, according to the organization’s website.

To register as a creator for the #LoveHillsborough Community Art Project, the arts commission encourages people to fill out this form. Mosaic submissions will be collected at designated times through the week of August 3 before installation later in the year.
