East Chapel Hill High School student Teresa Fang’s artwork will be on display at the Capitol Building.
Fang’s piece, “Small Businesses in My Hometown,” won the 2023 Congressional Art Competition, which is sponsored by members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Valerie Foushee, whose North Carolina district represents Orange, Durham, Alamance, Person and Granville counties, announced the first, second and third place winners earlier this month.
“I’ve always paid attention to my hometown’s small businesses, especially since the pandemic,” Fang told Chapelboro. “Some of my favorite small businesses closed because of the pandemic, due to the rising costs of inflation. These businesses are places of my childhood, where I grew up in, ate at, and are forever memorialized in my heart. In my artwork, ‘Small Businesses in My Hometown,’ I illustrated 88 storefronts from my memories to commemorate the past, celebrate the present, and welcome the incoming small businesses in Chapel Hill.”
Fang’s piece will be displayed in the Capitol for one year, while the second and third place artists will have their works displayed in Foushee’s office in Washington, D.C. and the Durham District office.
“I feel very excited and proud to represent my hometown,” Fang said. “I hope that my artwork can remind congressmen of the small businesses in towns across the country and the importance of maintaining an efficient, stable economy for our families and homes.”
Fang also told Chapelboro she will be in Washington for a reception in the Capitol.

This is not the first time Fang’s work has been shown to a wider audience. Earlier this year, an original documentary by Fang titled “MONEY TALKS: Inside the Inflation Surge” was chosen as one of just three high school winners of the C-SPAN Student Cam documentary competition. The film aired on C-SPAN in April.
