As the official filing period for 2023 local elections grows closer, the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners race has picked up a first-time candidate.
Educator Victoria Masika formally announced her intention to run for the town board on Sunday, launching her campaign website and announcing a kickoff event following her upcoming filing.
“I am running for election to the Town Commissioners to continue the transformative work underway in our town of Hillsborough and to lead new efforts,” she wrote in a release.
Masika is a fourth grade teacher in the Durham Public Schools system, who says she’s lived in Hillsborough for the last ten years. On her website, she says she’s an advocate for creating more affordable and accessible housing, while also serving as a voice for school communities. Building sustainable infrastructure, supporting economic growth, and continuing efforts of equity and diversity are listed as some of her other priorities.
“I am committed to listening to the concerns of our community members, working towards solutions that benefit everyone, and making transparent decisions that reflect the views and needs of our community,” Masika says on her campaign website. “Together, we can address the needs of our community to ensure that we have access to quality education, healthcare, and a safe environment.”
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is approaching a cycle that will have three seats up for election — one of which is open. Commissioner Mark Bell is running for mayor of the town, leaving his seat available. Commissioner Matt Hughes launched his re-election bid in early June, with Commissioner Evelyn Lloyd’s seat also on the ballot.
The filing period for North Carolina’s local elections in 2023 begins on Friday, July 7. Candidates will have through Friday, July 21 to formally enter their races.
