Despite running unopposed for office this fall, Barbara Foushee continues to rack up endorsements for her to become the Town of Carrboro’s next mayor.

The Collective PAC — a national organization dedicated to helping more Black candidates earn election to seats of power in the U.S. — shared that it is endorsing Foushee to lead the town.

“Barbara has a proven her record of putting people first as a member of the Carrboro Town Council, as well as in her decades of service to the community overall, so we are thrilled to support her candidacy for mayor,” said Kevin Olasanoye, the national political and organizing director for The Collective PAC. “We look forward to helping ensure she gets elected on Nov. 7.”

“Having the backing of The Collective PAC truly means a lot,” Foushee said in a release about the announcement. “I often speak about the importance of having a seat at the table where decisions are made that affect lives, and their organization works tirelessly to elect candidates who represent the interests of the diverse Black community across the country. I’m grateful to have their support.”

The Collective PAC began in 2016 with the goal of addressing the underrepresentation of Black residents in the U.S. across all levels of government. The group’s website says it wants to reach political equity, which would mean 13 percent of all elected offices in the United States would be held by a Black official.

Candidates who earned an endorsement from The Collective PAC filled out a questionnaire on its website, which features questions about advancing racial justice, addressing climate change, reforming the criminal justice system, their thoughts on education and more.

Prior to this latest endorsement, Foushee had earned support from groups like the Sierra Club, the Anderson-Thorpe-Battle Breakfast Club, NEXT Chapel Hill & Carrboro, and the INDY Week. After first being elected to the town council in 2017, she was re-elected in 2021 for a four-year term — meaning a special election will be needed in 2024 to fill her seat for its remaining time.

Early voting for the 2023 municipal elections is underway and will run through Saturday, November 4, with residents then having Election Day on Tuesday, November 7 as their final opportunity to cast their votes.
