Five sitting members of the Chapel Hill Town Council have publicly endorsed Mayor Pam Hemminger for re-election.
Hemminger is running against current town council member Hongbin Gu and UNC law student Zachary Boyce for the lone mayoral seat.
Mayor Pro Tem Michael Parker and council members Jess Anderson, Tai Huynh, Amy Ryan, and Karen Stegman all expressed their support of re-electing the incumbent candidate to a fourth term.
The endorsement was sent to 97.9 The Hill/Chapelboro.com Tuesday afternoon.
“It has been a genuine pleasure for me to work together with Pam over the past six years,” said Mayor Pro Tem Michael Parker. “She has been a true partner as we’ve made major strides in bringing new businesses to our Town and expanding our commercial tax base to lower the burden on our residents. Her decades of experience working in business and finance have helped keep the Town in strong financial shape.”
Council member Jess Anderson echoed Parker’s statement in her own endorsement.
“Pam has worked with me and many others in our community to make Chapel Hill a better place for all families, particularly those with financial and other systemic disadvantages,” said Anderson. “I really appreciate her collaboration with our schools and people across our community to live our values when it comes to working together and taking care of each other.”
Following these endorsements from council members, Hemminger said she is “truly grateful” for the confidence her collogues have given her as she seeks re-election.
“Together, we have faced significant challenges and seized on several important opportunities, accomplishing a great deal for our community,” said Hemminger. “Knowing that I have this strong support from colleagues tells me we are on the right track for a bright future for Chapel Hill.”
The West End Merchants, which consists of business owners on West Franklin street, also recently endorsed Hemminger. The group includes the owners of Mediterranean Deli, 411 West, Dead Mule Club, Italian Pizzaria (IP3), Carolina Brewery, Al’s Burger Shack and The Crunkleton.
“We know Pam loves Chapel Hill and strives to preserve the charm of our town and to help keep our local businesses thriving,” said the West End Merchants in statement last month.
Early voting in Orange County begins on Thursday, October 14, and will run through Saturday, October 30. Election Day will be Tuesday, November 2. For more election coverage and candidate introductions, visit Chapelboro’s Local Election Coverage page.
